Vancouver Kanga Cricket Project

The Vancouver Kanga Ball Project is a program to bring a modified version of the sport of cricket to elementary-aged students in the Vancouver School district. The concept of Kanga Cricket was developed and used extensively in Australia. This program uses safe plastic equipment to teach the concept of cricket and has the advantage of being able to be used both indoors and outdoors.

This program is based upon the very successful Burnaby Schools Program. The Vancouver program will use the Burnaby model, which has been running for the last two years.

The Vancouver program has begun by focusing on 12 - 15 high-need schools, located predominantly in North-East zone (Strathcona and Hastings area). There are currently approximately 5000 students registered in these schools. With our program focusing on intermediate students with the option of primary classes becoming involved it is estimated that the program would reach over 3000 students. The majority of these schools have an Inner City designation and provision of this type of program will be welcomed.

Each school will receive one week of instruction on the skills involved in Kanga Ball (fielding, batting, and bowling) and then be taught how to play the game. Each class will receive between three and five lessons depending upon the size of the classes can continue with the game after the instructor has left.
